Some friends and I are creating the most amazing hoop dance event ever
on the beautiful island of Bali. We are super-stoked about blending
yoga, sound meditation, sacred geometry, and ecstatic movement with
the hoop dance flow. Jocelyn Gordon of Hoop Dance DC is one of the
featured teachers. I've created a web page that should provide you

Trinumeral Music Festival on 08.08.08!! Deerfields, NC

Hey lovely ladies (and fellers)!
I just got a message from the guy who helps put on this festival, that is ironically scheduled the same day as World Hoop Day every year.
It looks like a blast and the line-up is great, AND it's close to a lot of you NC hoopers! If you don't have plans for World Hoop Day, you should definitely look into this and we can all celebrate World Hoop Day together!

Trinumeral is a 3-day camping, music and arts festival scheduled to take place from Friday, August 8th through Sunday, August 10th at Deerfield’s Amphitheater, in the Mills River community, close to the Asheville Airport. The retreat is a 940-acre family-owned tract of unspoiled wilderness offering camping, swimming, and hiking. Surrounding the ponds and two authentic cabins, apple orchards and rhododendrons cascade throughout the Queens Creek Mountains. Tent camping will be plentiful, with a secluded family camp ground set aside. Car camping and RV passes are also available at an additional cost.

Cheap LED hula hoops I found

So I just bought this LED hoop online on ebay, I've been watching this guy sell them on the cheap for about a month now and thought I would buy one and check them out

on their website they go for $125 and the charger is like $30 and shipping is like $15

So, I'm pretty impressed with the price I got.

I got mine for $113 and I've been seeing a lot of the single colors go for $75!!!!!!!! THe hoops have 25 led lights in them, they are rechargeable, collapsible, and come with a charger.

Just thought I'd share the good deal with others

NOt just another hoop shop

I've been hooping for awhile now. Hooping is super fun, but I sometimes come across experiences i know can be improved. I finally put some ideas into tangible solutions and started a hoop shop.

LED hoop for sale

Hey there everyone!
I bought an LED Hoop from superhooper.org a little while ago. Here are the specs:
*Single-color (GREEN)
*Grip Tape (Teal, Pink, and Blue)
*38 inch diameter

I've used it less than a dozen times. It still has battery life. I bought it for $118 (shipping&handling included). I'll sell it for $75 (s&h included).

If you're wondering why I'm selling it; it's not the hoop-- it's me! I'm sure we've all heard this before ; p But, really, I'm a college student who spent her birthday money on a toy I never get to practice with. Therefore, when I do get the chance to play, I get frustrated trying to readjust to this hoop.

First National Hooper's Conference!!!

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

HELP! fire hoop broken!!

I know someone on here can help me! I've contacted the company that I purchased it from and I haven't heard anything back and I've got a performance July 4th weekend!! I'm kinda freaking out!!!

Problem:
Whatever the nut-bolt mechanism that holds the spokes in tightly has broken. The part on the inside of the hoop that keeps the spoke sturdy, has come loose and is now rattling inside the hoop. It has happened on 3 of the holes...these parts must be replaceable!! Can I purchase them at any hardware store?

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.

Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

Advice Neede on European Hooping

Hello all you lovely hoopers! I am Alley'Oop(nice to meet you)...and I have been spinning for quite a long time (hitting 5 years or so) I am not very good at posting and being online, but I do check out the hooping online whenever I can. And I was hoping all you wonderful people might be able to help me out with some suggestions.

Im a Poi Spinner and a Hooper, and oddly enough I started with fire, and then moved into performances with black light a little later. I also hold a Pyrotechnics licence and have been performing all over the place as far as Mexico. I have been asked to go to Europe for a fire festival to teach and perform on June 15-17, so i booked a ticket. But it has come to light that I am in a position to get funding from the arts council in newfoundland to do more then just the festival, and this is where you guys come in. Does anyone have any suggestion of who to look up, take classes with, learn from or spin with in Europe?? I have reached a plateau in the development of my hooping art, and it is time to refresh and collaboate with some other commited artists. I have to say, it is amazing how big hula hooping has become, I remember when i first started, there was hardly anything online, now there is this huge community. Its wonderful to see it florish. Thank you to all you people who have the patience to post online, and share your knowledge with others. The computer is really not one of my strong points, but its becoming very apperant that it is important to be online, even for local events.

So keep your eyes out for www.alleyoop.ca . Thanks for any help you might offer, and if anyone knows anything about pyrotechnics in Europe, i would love to have more info about that as well.

New Hooping Videos Tribe

So theres not that many hoopers here in boston... And i feel like im starting to get stuck on tricks to do, its like reaching a platue and i know theres so much more out there to do with the hoop i love dearly.... so im wondering if people would be interested in describing the tricks they love & those they are working on.

Lately ive been working on hooping around my knees. Im working on kicking out with one leg and putting it back into the hoop. But i can never get it back in the hoop with out kickig the hoop down to the ground. Any tips for timing on this?

A little hoop history

I thought this was an interesting find. It reminded me of a topic about using natural materials.

Children around the world have always played with hoops, twirling, rolling and throwing them. Traditional materials for hoops have included grapevines and stiff grasses. In Egypt around 3000 years ago, hoops made out of grape vines were propelled around the ground with sticks. In ancient Greece their use was recommended for losing weight. In the 14th century, "hooping" was popular in England and medics blamed it for heart attacks and back dislocations. The word "hula" was added in the early 18th century as sailors that visited Hawaii noticed the similarity between hula dancing and hooping.
In 1957 the hula hoop was reinvented by Richard Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin, who had founded the Wham-O company in 1948. The idea came from a Californian who had visited Australia who told Knerr and Melin about children twirling bamboo hoops around the waist in gym class. So the new Hula Hoops were created with Marlex, a recently invented durable plastic (where the hoop hype helped as a kickstarter for Marlex production). Today the hula hoop is known as the biggest and most profitable fad of the 1950s.
After the hoop was released in 1958, Wham-O sold over 100 million in two years. This was referenced in the 1994 movie The Hudsucker Proxy by the Coen Brothers, which gives a fictional account of how it was created. As the fad burned out, Wham-O again struck lucky with the release of their Frisbee.
One famous hooper is Lori Lynn Lomeli.

I am teaching a class called HOOPLAY at dance camp, scheduled for Thurs 6/22 from 3-5pm. The camp is appx 4hours from SF, near Visalia in the High Sierras. First Annual Burning Coconut Man Regional this 4/20 on Thailand!

If you're happening to be celebrating FourTwenty on 4/20/06 in Thailand I invite you to our party in Lonely Beach on the island of Koh Chang - only three hours from Bangkok by planes/ferries and automobiles. It's The First Annual Burning Coconut Man on an acre of cleared-out land. Bring your tent! There will be pink faux fur, X-mas lights, LED lights, rope lights, black lights, DJ's, food, shadowing dancing and Lady Boys dancing on our strip poles. There will be poi, Annah and her Hoop Babes (hopefully) And there will Burning Coconut Man. A 20 foot Man made entirely out of 1000's of coconut shells with a non-coconut wooden skeleton. So... I just made the big move from SF to Honolulu and it appears that there is not a Hawaii hoop group as of yet. I am willing to create one but wanted to see if there are already other hoopers here in the 808 state who'd be interested in a regular gathering or maybe want to co-moderate with me???

Since I am relatively new to hooping, myself, I'd really love to have input from some more seasoned girls and guys. And I did bring 10 hoops over with me so there's enough to get some newbies started as well.

Critical Mass Hula Hooping in DC Sept. 24th!!

Hey all, let's initiate critical mass hula hooping during the major protest against the war during summit meetings of the IMF/World Bank in DC on September 24th!! I don't think I need to tell you why this would be such a relevant and powerful statement....

Lots of people are meeting at the Washington Memorial at 11am on that Saturday for a massive march and concert. Perhaps we could meet up in this area. There are other protests/happenings happening all over the city Sept. 23-26th. Here's a website with lots of info.: www.septemberaction.org

is a good source of alternative media coverage and event info.

Please make suggestions for how to organize this (it seems like if we have a place and time to meet, and individuals have affinity groups/friends/family (plan ahead for problems that may be encountered) to look out for each other, this can be pretty simple to organize)!! My thought is since many of us know how to make our own hoops, not only can we bring our own hoops, but we can make some to bring along and pass out (It ends up costing me roughly $17 to make 10 basic hoops). Maybe if you don't know how to make hoops, you could donate the cost of supplies to someone who does...

I realize this is somewhat last minute, but let's start talking and get this happening!!!

Hello everyone, my name is Malia and I just joined this tribe about 3 minutes ago... :P I recently picked up a hula hoop for the first time in over 10 years and haven't been able to put it back down! I used to hoop a lot when I was a kid... (Typically walking around on the driveway eating a grilled cheese sandwich at the same time, haha.) Now that I'm older I have a completely new appreciation for it! I've been so excited about hooping and wanting to share the joy of it with all of my friends (who now think I'm crazy btw) and it's SO thrilling to find a group of people who love to hula hoop too! Well, that's my rambling introduction. :) I look forward to getting to know you guys.

Forgive me father (and fellow hoopers) for I have sinned. It's been quite a few weeks since my last confession and my addiction is proving to get worse. As many of us do, I keep a hoop in the back of my car. You know... for those emergency hooping outbursts. Well, I have resorted to pretending to be a smoker at work so I can take short little breaks and go out to my car to sneak a quick hoop in the parking lot next to my car. It's sick, I know.

if any one is going check out the disco marathon sunday at shambhala fractal forest stage. funky ass music and hoola hooping go hand in hand . Nothing like 50-100 hoops goin off all around you at once . A beautiful good time

Why Can't I Stop????

I can look as if I've been beat up in the back alley of a liquor store with bruises covering my entire body and yet if the hoop is within eyesight, it'll be back around my waist within seconds. There must be a name for this type of psychosis. It's almost like those dogs who will chase the ball until they die. It is a mental condition hovering somewhere around addiction. Why can't I stop hooping????

Weekly H.A. Confessional

Paynie has suggested that we start a weekly Hoopers Anonymous Confessional where we can let out all of our secret hooping acts. Skipping lunch to hoop, being late for that appointment so you can practice that drop out, picking up the hoop without thinking about it while in the middle of an argument with your boyfriend...you know who you are and you know what you do. Shame on you!
