So theres not that many hoopers here in boston... And i feel like im starting to get stuck on tricks to do, its like reaching a platue and i know theres so much more out there to do with the hoop i love dearly.... so im wondering if people would be interested in describing the tricks they love & those they are working on.
Lately ive been working on hooping around my knees. Im working on kicking out with one leg and putting it back into the hoop. But i can never get it back in the hoop with out kickig the hoop down to the ground. Any tips for timing on this?

Re: Trick Share
Thu, March 31, 2005 - 2:35 PMAlthough this is a trick I haven't quite mastered myself (only have been able to do it a handful of times) I would suggest waiting until the hoop is almost open on the front part of your stationary leg before putting your other leg back through. by the time you leg gets to the opening - the opening should be right there for your leg. of course this theory has better results written than practiced. good luck!
My current favorite tricks are arm weaving an staffing. Because I am more of a hoop dancer than a trickster, I find it hard to incorporate staffing into my dancing, but I just think it looks great and it'll look even better when it's burning!! -

Mon, April 4, 2005 - 9:21 AMHey beautiful!
You know what arm weaving is. When the hoop is around your shoulders and you alternate taking your arms out over the hoop and putting back in again.
Staffing is spinning the hoop around/behind/above your body like you would with a staff. Difficult to explain.
Wish I had a video camera. I'd tape it for you and send it so you can see. -

Mon, April 4, 2005 - 9:23 AMOh yeah... and thanks about the legwarmers. Dude I needed something to wear really quickly and threw those together on the sewing machine in 1/2 hr. They're not pretty up close, but they do the trick. I think I'm going to try to make more because I like hooping in my Chucks and they don't go with everything.
Can't wait until you're able to come back so we can hoop in my new place!!!!

Re: Trick Share
Wed, April 20, 2005 - 6:37 PMI'm in Orange County, CA and I haven't met any hoopers here. I drive an hour and a half to LA to meet up with other hoopers at least once a week.
I'm trying to learn how to kick up the hoop from the ground and kick it up the legs. I haven't gotten started because I have really sensitive ankles and knees. Any suggestions on protection and how to start the trick? -

Re: Trick Share
Thu, April 21, 2005 - 1:51 PMtry to wear pant that cover your ankles. Its easier for me to get the hoop up if im barefoot tho. I like to work on the trick a few times & thengive it up for the days or else its just to much! try it again a few days later, you;ll be suprised how much better you get with each succssive try...but don't over do it or your in for some big bruises! (but we all love to show those off any way! ) :) good luck & happy hooping ~ alicia

Wed, June 14, 2006 - 9:55 PMWearing thick ankle socks helps, as well. And pants.
Once you get it, it's not so bad, but learning it...prepare for bruising.

Re: Trick Share
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 12:38 AMi've been working on knee hooping for a while now, getting comfortable with it by doing it while walking, with alternating legs being the dominant movers, bringing it back up. i just got the kicking one leg out thing, and for me the timing happened when i spun in the direction the hoop was going. that gave me just a little more time to get my leg back in, and it is sooo fun!! i can get into a rhythm and do it a bunch of times in a row, slowly spinning in the direction of the hoop.
as for kicking it up from the ground, the first night i got that one was after hooping like crazy at a party, all warmed up with shoes and pants on. that was much less painful than just bare legs. you just have to resign yourself to a few shin bruises until you figure that one out, but once you get it it's much easier and softer! -

Sat, April 30, 2005 - 5:33 PMlegwarmers!!!!
i wear legwarmers under my pants to protect my ankles (which are a bruised-up mess anyways) and especially if i'm wearing a skirt... tall boots help as well, as long as they're not slippery ones or you'll be fighting to keep the hoop up.

Re: Trick Share
Sun, March 19, 2006 - 11:01 PMOh muh goodness there's just so many... I'll "invent" new ones, and then forget about em two days later... There's so many cool tricks that I don't even know that I know... OOH! A couple I've been working on lately:
1- involves "staffing", When spinning it above your head, bring it down as though you were going to bring it around your back ( I hoop counterclockwise), but instead of bringing it all the way around, (here's the fun part!) kick your left leg out, let the hoop glide from hand, to mid shin, to ankle, while kicking your leg around your back, rotating the hoop on your foot as you go, and grab the hoop with your right hand as it comes from behind you! It looks pretty groovy I've been told...
2- You know that up and down trick? I have no idea what it's called lol... You'll have it spinning above your head, then you'll swoop it down around your waist and let it chill there, then you grab it behind your back, and swoop it back over your head. That one! Well you do the beginning step, where you bring it down, only you bring it down lower, like to your thighs... Here's the tricky part- while bringing it down around you, lift your left leg out of it, and have it go around one thigh... Then stick your leg back in it like a round peg in a round hole baby!
Much love to all my fellow hoopaholiks... Be safe, hoop often!

Re: Trick Share
Tue, May 30, 2006 - 10:02 AMHooping around your knees - I think I'd be satisfied with that - at least now.
I'm new to this. Hoping to meet some NY hoopers soon. Meanwhile, I've been all on my own. One of the things that got me stymied is hooping around my knees. I'm able to bring the hoop from my waist to my hips, but not usually for long before I feel like I have to bump it back up or it will fall to the floor. And I've never managed to get it to stay on my legs. I just wish you could give me some hints on how to do what You can do - how to hoop around my knees.

that trick is called "beam me up" and i still have yet to even get it right ONCE :P -

Re: Trick Share
Wed, June 7, 2006 - 10:54 PMNot quite! Beam me up is almost what Sarah is dscribing. she had beam me up a LONG time ago! This is beam me up with a *twist*. Read the post carefully! Theres's a pulling the leg out aspect to Sarah's version. I gave sarah her first hoop like 5 months ago. She' s the moost natural hooper I've ever met! LOVE this girl. Halfway thru "beam me up" it becomes a one-legged hooping trick! So much more fun! And of course...don't forget to try it with your non-dominasnt side. . . . . this is the most important thing in my practice thse days..I just got comfy with goin clockwise...I'm a counter-clockwise gal usually.

Thu, June 8, 2006 - 7:23 AMNice video! my main focus these days has been spinning backwards(counter-clockwise) i was wondering if you knew a counter-clockwise step through move.....? or if you could explain the move where you flip the hoop around and keep it traveling around the outside of your body? if that makes sense...mid way through your video anyways that'd be awesome i have seen that move once before and still cannot figure it out!!!!
Would be much appreciated...Happy hooping! -

Re: Trick Share
Thu, June 8, 2006 - 10:26 AMI do have a counter-clockwise step through I've been working on. I actually learned it from a description Betsy rose posted on the hula hooping tribe. I start hooping on my waist and kind of bend forward so I'm vertical hooping but still on the waist. Then when the hoop is on its way down, step through it with your right foot and grab it with your left hand. I'm still kinda tryin to figure out way to do it that doesn't involve kicking my leg up to the moon. LOL! I just made a video for you but am waiting for it to upload on youtube. It takes forever, so I probably won't post it till I get back home. I also made one of that helicopter thing you mentioned (that's what I call it anyway) I did it slower so you can see how it's done. It's very much like spinning a staff. -
